How to improve your wellbeing with Vagus Nerve Exercises

Review by Gunnel Minett

In recent research the vagus nerve has been claimed to hold a key to physical and mental welling. The vagus nerve connects the brain with several inner organs, regarded as crucial to our wellbeing. It is involved in balancing heart rate, digestion, stress levels, and it is even said to have the capacity to influence connection with the outer world and general happiness. Some call it the internal the communication superhighway.

This book offers a set of exercises based on the recently developed Polyvagal Theory, or PVT for short. The Polyvagal Theory was developed in 1994 by the American psychologist and neuroscientist Stephen Porges. The theory can be described as a collection of proposed evolutionary, neuroscientific, and psychological constructs for the role of the vagus nerve in emotion regulation, social connection and fear response.

Following this theory, this book describes a number of exercise to improve the function of the vagus nerve such as breathing exercises, yoga, chi gong and thai chi as well as posture, physical exercise and general life style and even diet and sounds.

Even if the he Polyvagal Theory in itself is not entirely endorsed by current social neuroscience, the exercises listed in this book are based on well established exercises to improve both mental and physical health. So even as an easily accessible guide to improving general health, this book does a good job.
