Ways to Better Breathing written by Carola Speads
Basic Breathing Techniques for Everyday Use
Review by Gunnel Minett
Carola Speads learnt breathwork in Germany, at the Anna Herman School of Physical Training and Movement in Berlin. In this book she presents some basic breathing techniques designed to improve breathing. Carols Speads starts by explaining the role of habits and the best way to breathe. She also looks at sensations related to breathing to help us detect our own personal breathing pattern. Breathing consists of three distinctly different parts – inhalation, exhalation and pause and we get an explanation of the importance of the various parts.
Following this introduction outlining the basic principles of proper breathing Speads presents a number of exercises aimed at improving the breathing pattern. They are easy to do and the instructions are very easy to follow. This makes the book a very good guide to better breathing, an area poorly neglected by most adults, but which despite its simplicity can make a huge difference to our lives.
