A Promising Way to Health

Review by Gunnel Minett

In this book Dr Jahnke presents the Chinese concept of Qi (Chi), its origin and how it is used both in medicine, as a way to maintain health and vitality for both body and mind, and as a way to reach a deeper understanding of life.
The concept of Qi or subtle life energy was discovered many thousand of years ago and has since been cultivated in Chinese monasteries and hospitals since then. Through very profound yet simple exercises the Chinese have developed a number of finely tuned and precise ways to increase vitality, longevity and inner peace as well as healing illness. To begin with, the concept of Qi was kept secret from the general public and only taught from master to student in versions that differed between the various master lineages.

The book consists of a general presentation of Qi followed by instructions in the different phases to; discover, gather, circulate, purify, direct, conserve, store, transform, dissolve in and transmit Qi. It may not seem very much, but it covers all we need to know to totally transform our lives and bring ourselves into harmony with our surrounding world. By doing so we create the best possible environment for our body and mind to function at its best with all the positive effects this brings.

Each chapter starts with an account of Dr Jahnke’s own travels in China and is followed by very clear and easy to follow instructions for some of the basic movements in Qigong. Qigong is one technique to aid the flow of Qi through the body and to open up the body to its full potential. The personal accounts gives a very pleasant touch of direct insight into the teaching of Qi in China that balances the more precise information that follows.
This is one of the best books I have read on Qi and Tai Chi. It is beautifully presented with Chinese signs of the key words in each chapter in the margin. The explanation of Qi is very clear and the personal travel story running through the book provides a good balance that well illustrates the basic concept of harmonising Qi.
